            Major Agriculture Products of Kerala

      The major agriculture products of Kerala are Rice , Sugarcane , Pepper , Ginger , Turmeric , Cardamom , cashew nut , Tapioca, coconut , areca nut , tea , coffee rubber. Most of the income of Keralites is from agriculture. The land of Kerala is very much suitable for agriculture because Kerala is getting a lot of rainfall.  The average rainfall per year in Kerala is 400cm. Kerala is blessed with many ever flowing rivers. Artificial dams and canals are also made for irrigation of thousands of hectors of land.
                 
      A vast area of land in Kerala is planted with teak and other kinds of trees by the government of Kerala as a part of the green revolution in the state.

      Kerala’s agriculture has the distinction of having the highest gross income per net cropped area. On a national scale, 92% of the rubber, 70 % of coconut, 60 % of tapioca and almost 100 % of lemon grass oil is produced from Kerala. It is also the single largest producer of a number of other crops like banana and ginger, besides having tea and coffee in abundance.

       A comprehensive re-orientation of the department with World Bank assistance was undertaken during 1983 and the training and visit program was implemented. The agriculture development units, Krishibhavans were established for each panchayath during the period 1986-87. The soil conservation and soil survey divisions functions as two subunits of the department.
